Institute for Sport Marketing

Founded in 2001 by Dr. Robert Wanzel, the Institute for Sport Marketing (ISM) was officially approved as a Laurentian University Research Centre on July 18th, 2007.  The ISM is currently working a variety of high impact applied research projects that seek to support sport management practice and further knowledge in the field. Originally founded to work with government, professional sport and amateur/Olympic/grassroots sport to find better ways to resource sport in Canada, the ISM celebrated the completion of its five-year work with a Summit meeting of industry partners and stakeholders in May of 2006. Building from these roots in applied research, the ISM continues to work with industry partners and concurrently develop its academic research component.  The future of the ISM is very bright as it seeks to fulfill its mandate to expand the knowledge base related to sport marketing in Canada.

In 2007, the Institute for Sport Marketing along with its partners, the Canadian Sponsorship Forum and leading market research firm, IMI International set out to gain greater understanding of the Canadian sponsorship industry through an exhaustive research study. Conducted over the summer months and presented at the 2007 Canadian Sponsorship Forum held in Toronto, Lead Investigators, Norm O’Reilly (ISM Director) and Benoit Séguin (ISM Fellow) reached out to thousands of corporations, properties and agencies to develop the most comprehensive study on the scope and scale of Canada’s sponsorship marketing industry. The full report, which includes over 130 pages of full details and supporting research, is now available for $895+GST through the Canadian Sponsorship Forum’s website (canadiansponsorshipforum.com).

The landscape study will continue in 2008 and requires the ongoing contributions of data by those active within the industry and we would ask anyone involved in Canada’s sponsorship scene as a sponsor, sponsee or agency to visit sponsorshiplandscape.ca and respond to the survey (available mid-February 2008). All those that do will receive a copy of the summary report in return for their time and input. Results from that study will be presented in Halifax at the 2008 Canadian Sponsorship Forum being presented in conjunction with the IIHF World Hockey Championships.
